The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation's largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. The BSA provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness.

For nearly a century, the BSA has helped build the future leaders of this country by combining educational activities and lifelong values with fun. The Boy Scouts of America believes — and, through nearly a century of experience, knows — that helping youth is a key to building a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society.

Diabetes

Diabetes Defined
Diabetes is a chronic disease, where the body is unable to use blood glucose for energy. As a result, hyperglycemia (elevated blood sugar levels) and hypoglycemia (decreased blood sugar levels) occur. Hyper and hypoglycemia are conditions that lead to serious long-term complications, such as:

Kidney failure
Blindness
Skin infections
Nerve damage
Gangrene
Cardiovascular disease and blood vessel damage
Birth defects
Stroke
Death
* Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death in the United States; however, it can be reduced by proper diagnosis, ongoing treatment and follow-ups.

Major types of diabetes:

Type 1 Diabetes: the pancreas no longer makes insulin, and as a result, blood glucose cannot enter the cells to be used for energy. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert carbohydrates (sugar) into usable energy for the brain and muscles.
Type 2 Diabetes: either the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin or the body cannot use insulin correctly.
Gestational Diabetes: a form of diabetes that develops during pregnancy and characterized by high blood glucose levels. It is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes development later on.
Prediabetes: The earlier form of Type 2 Diabetes, whereby blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet those of type 2 diabetes.

Who gets Diabetes?
Diabetes can affect any individual at any age.
Type 1 Diabetes is most commonly diagnosed in children and adolescents.
Type 2 Diabetes is most commonly diagnosed in older, overweight and sedentary individuals, and certain ethnicities, such as African American, Alaska Native, American Indian, Asian and Pacific Islander American, and Latino American. People with a family history of diabetes are also at a greater risk.
Gestational Diabetes is most commonly diagnosed during pregnancy around 28 weeks or later.

Prediabetes is most commonly diagnosed in people who:
Are overweight or obese.
Have a parent, brother or sister who has diabetes.
Had diabetes during pregnancy (called gestational diabetes) or had a baby who weighed more than 9 pounds at birth.
Belong to any of the following ethnic groups: African American, Native American, Latin American or Asian/Pacific Islander.
Have high blood pressure (above 140/90 mm Hg).
Have high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level (“good” cholesterol) is less than 40 mg per dL (for men) or less than 50 mg per dl (for women), or your triglyceride level is higher than 250 mg per dL.
Women who have polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). For more details about this condition, the ADA has provided lots of information and resources here.

Symptoms of Diabetes
Many people go on for years undiagnosed until experiencing the severe complications listed above. According to the ADA, here are the symptoms to look for in the short-term:

Type 1 Diabetes
Frequent urination
Unusual thirst
Extreme hunger
Unusual weight loss
Extreme fatigue and Irritability

Type 2 Diabetes
Any of the type 1 symptoms
Frequent infections
Blurred vision
Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal
Tingling/numbness in the hands/feet
Recurring skin, gum, or bladder infections
*Often people with type 2 diabetes have no symptoms and are diagnosed via blood testing

If you have one or more of these diabetes symptoms, see your doctor right away. You can also take ADA's Online Diabetes Risk Test to find out if you are at risk for diabetes.

Can I Prevent Diabetes?
YES - there is a way to delay and even present type 2 diabetes’ onset through lifestyle changes. By having a healthier diet, increasing exercise levels and maintaining a healthy weight, you can markedly reduce your risk. For more information on preventative measures, see the ADA's guidelines.

What are normal blood glucose levels?

These numbers are based on the clinical practice recommendations of the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

How to Join Troop 27

BSA nationally has the following age requirement for becoming a Boy Scout:

Completed the fifth grade and be at least 10 years old, or be 11 years old, or have earned the Arrow of Light Award and be at least 10 years old, and be under 18 years old.

If you meet the above requirements (or will soon) and are interested in checking out what Troop 27 is all about, we welcome visitors to come to a Troop Meeting to see how the group operates. Parents are always welcome. We normally meet every Monday between 7:00 and 8:30 pm - see the Troop Calendar link at the right for meeting dates. Meetings are held at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer 7500 Southside Blvd, Jax, FL 32256.

You can also contact any adult leaders if you would like to ask questions or just talk.

For those considering crossing over from Webelos during the 2010 / 2011 Scout Year

Troop 27 camps monthly, but we cannot commit each event to new scout skills. For this reason, we have a special campout the weekend of March 18th, 2011 (we call it Green Bar Bill) - where we begin the new crossovers on basic skills, general camping, pitching tents, knife safety, fires, etc. The boys get numerous sign-offs that weekend. If you are a Cub leader wanting to bring some boys to Troop 27, you may consider scheduling your crossover in February (or prior). There will be Troop meetings 2/28, 3/7 and 3/14, 2011. We want new boys to attend at least 2 of those 3 prior to their first camping experience March 18th.

Although new scouts are welcome at any meeting, ideally, Feb. 28, 2011 works well for an unofficial NEW SCOUT FIRST MEETING.

In reference to Eagle Projects: Assisting another Scout with his Eagle project is something that all scouts need to participate in repeatedly. This is not a “did it one time” or “once-a-year” thing. If a Scout does not have a prior committment, they should make every effort to attend. For those who stay focused in scouting and continue on toward Eagle, at some point in the future, they will look to other scouts for help with their Eagle project - there is no better way to learn to lead than being lead. Experience is the best teacher. Although the days usually involve physical labor, they are always good-hearted fun among the boys and they always benefit a community cause.

About Troop 27

Boy Scout Troop 27 is in the North Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America. We are sponsored by The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 7500 Southside Blvd, Jacksonville, FL. Troop meetings are held on Monday nights from 7pm to 8:30pm. Please check our calendar for specific meeting dates and times.

The meetings are run by the Scouts themselves under the guidance of trained adult leaders. Parents are welcome to visit a troop meeting anytime and are expected to help out as requested by the Troop Committee. Parents, Scout Leaders and the youth work together through the Eight Methods of Scouting.

Troop 27 was first chartered in 2001. In the past 8 years, hundreds of young men have passed through our doors. Most stayed a few years and for one reason or another dropped out. 13 have stayed in long enough to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout as of 2008. The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer is our current sponsor…many thanks to them.

The Troop is primarily an outdoor activity Troop. Between September and May (generally following the school calendar), we camp once monthly - some “bring everything” type events and others backpacking, “pack-only-what-you-can-carry”. We participate in several District Events (we are part of the Riverbend District) - including their main blowout - the CAMPOREE held every January.

Our Troop goes to a summer camp each year. At camp the first year Scouts can earn many of the requirements for most of the first three ranks. The older Scouts can concentrate on the earning of Merit Badges or take in a high adventure program. They typically sleep in two man canvas tents that are set-up on wood platforms. Scouts eat in the mess hall and swim in the camp lakes. Some years we go to Summer Camp locally, at Camp Shands, and other years we travel north to the Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee area for a more scenic experience.

Our Troop has been to all 3 National High Adventure Bases.
This is the ultimate in an outdoor camping adventure for not only the Scout, but for the Leaders, too.

We take canoe trips in the summer/fall time and hike/backpack in the winter/spring.

Troop 27 is an active Troop with a dynamic year round program. We are one of the largest troops in our District and pride ourselves on delivering a quality troop program. We believe in providing the youth with challenging opportunities and High Adventure trips that encompass the aims and methods of Scouting. Our current membership exceeds 40 youth (ages 10 1/2 to 17) and 25+ registered leaders. When a boy joins the Troop, we welcome the entire family as well. Many parents find themselves having as much fun as the Scouts!

Troop 27 was established in 2001 by Scoutmaster Kevin Pryor after his son advanced from a local Cub Scout Pack. Kevin served as our Scoutmaster as his son and four other boys made their way to Eagle. Afterwards, he turned the leadership of the Troop over to our 2nd Scoutmaster, Ron Fish. Ron was a dedicated leader for several years and 5 boys achieved the rank of Eagle during his tenure. Our third Scoutmaster was Dave Albers. Under his leadership our Troop garnered another three Eagles. Today, our current Scoutmaster is Ken Grula and the Troop now has over 15 Eagles with several Scouts within a couple of merit badges and one hefty project from obtaining the rank of Eagle.

Our Eagle Scout Honor Roll can be found here.

Unauthorized and Restricted Activities

A complete listing of the Unauthorized and Restricted Activities can be found here.

The following activities have been declared unauthorized and restricted by the Boy Scouts of America:

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are banned from program use. ATVs are defined as motorized recreational cycles with three or four large, soft tires, designed for off-road use on a variety of terrains.
Boxing, karate, and related martial arts—except judo, aikido, and Tai Chi—are not authorized activities.
Chainsaws and mechanical log splitters may be authorized for use only by trained individuals over the age of 18, using proper protective gear in accordance with local laws.
Exploration of abandoned mines is an unauthorized activity.
Varsity football teams and interscholastic or club football competition and activities are unauthorized activities.
Fireworks secured, used, or displayed in conjunction with program and activities is unauthorized except where the fireworks display is conducted under the auspices of a certified or licensed fireworks control expert.
The selling of fireworks as a fund-raising or money-earning activity by any group acting for or on behalf of members, units, or districts may not be authorized by councils.
Flying in hang gliders, ultralights, experimental class aircraft, or hot-air balloons (whether or not they are tethered); parachuting; and flying in aircraft as part of a search and rescue mission are unauthorized activities.
Motorized go-carts and motorbike activities are unauthorized for Cub Scout and Boy Scout programs. All motorized speed events, including motorcycles, boats, drag racing, demolition derbies, and related events, are not authorized activities for any program level.
Participation in amateur or professional rodeo events and council or district sponsorship of rodeos are not authorized.
Hunting is not an authorized Cub Scout or Boy Scout activity, although hunting safety is part of the program curriculum.
(The purpose of this policy is to restrict chartered packs, troops, and teams from conducting hunting trips. However, this policy does not restrict Venturing crews from conducting hunting trips or special adult hunting expeditions provided that adequate safety procedures are followed and that all participants have obtained necessary permits and/or licenses from either state or federal agencies. While hunter safety education might not be required prior to obtaining a hunting license, successful completion of the respective state voluntary program is required before participating in the activity.)
Reference: Ranger Guidebook, No. 3128
Motorized personal watercraft, such as Jet-Skis(R), are not authorized for use in Scouting aquatics, and their use should not be permitted in or near BSA program areas.
Except for (1) law enforcement officers required to carry firearms within their jurisdiction, and (2) circumstances within the scope of the BSA hunting policy statement, firearms should not be in the possession of any person engaged in camping, hiking, backpacking, or any other Scouting activity other than those specifically planned for target shooting under the supervision of a certified firearms instructor. (Among the purposes of this policy is to prohibit adult leaders from bringing firearms on BSA camping and hiking activities or to unit meetings.)
Parasailing, or any activity in which a person is carried aloft by a parachute, parasail, kite, or other device towed by a motorboat, including a tube, or by any other means, is unauthorized.
All activities related to bungee cord jumping (sometimes called shock cord jumping) are unauthorized.
Technical tree-climbing with ropes or harnesses is not authorized as a unit activity.
Water chugging and related activities are not authorized for any program level.
Pointing any type of firearm or simulated firearm at any individual is unauthorized. Scout units may plan or participate in paintball, laser tag or similar events where participants shoot at targets that are neither living nor human representations. Units with Council approval may participate in formally organized historical reenactment events, where firearms are used and intentionally aimed over the heads of the reenactment participants. The use of paintball guns, laser guns or similar devices may be utilized in target shooting events with Council approval and following the Sweet 16 of BSA safety. Council approval means the approval of the Scout Executive or his designee on a tour permit specifically outlining details of the event.
(However, law enforcement departments and agencies using firearms in standard officer/agent training may use their training agenda when accompanied with appropriate safety equipment in the Law Enforcement Exploring program.)

Carbon Tetrachloride
Carbon tetrachloride must never be used in any way in the Scouting program. Even in small quantities, this poison has proved to be so deadly that it must be ruled out as a cleaning fluid, a fire extinguisher, a poison for insect killing, and a watermark detector for stamp collecting.

Heroism Awards

Recognition may be given to a member of the Boy Scouts of America—Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, Venturer, or adult leader—where the evidence presented to the National Court of Honor, in accordance with prescribed regulations, shows that he or she saved or attempted to save life under circumstances that indicate heroism and risk of his or her own life. The court will give consideration to resourcefulness and to demonstrated skill in rescue methods.

In no case shall recognition be given where it appears that the risk involved was merely in the performance of duty or the meeting of an obligation because of responsibility to supervise and give leadership to the person or people whose lives were saved.

It shall be wholly within the discretion of the National Court of Honor to determine from evidence presented which lifesaving award, if any, shall be made. Awards are issued in the name of the Boy Scouts of America. These awards are as follows:

Honor Medal With Crossed Palms. The Honor Medal With Crossed Palms may be awarded in exceptional cases to a youth member or adult leader who has demonstrated both unusual heroism and extraordinary skill or resourcefulness in saving or attempting to save life at extreme risk to self.

Honor Medal. The Honor Medal may be awarded to a youth member or adult leader who has demonstrated unusual heroism and skill in saving or attempting to save life at considerable risk to self.

Heroism Award. The Heroism Award may be awarded to a youth member or adult leader who has demonstrated heroism and skill in saving or attempting to save life at minimum risk to self.

The Scouts voted and Camp Rainey Mountain in Northeast Georgia was chosen. Summer Camp 2010 will be held from June 27 thru July 3rd, 2010. The cost is $260 per Scout - adult cost is $120/ea but it is discounted based on the number of Scouts - so those payments are received last.

Another year has gone by and it is time once again for the BackpackingLight staff to come up with their lists of favorite pieces of gear. Some have commented that it is getting noticeably tougher to come up with three pieces of gear that have become most favored and most depended upon over the past year. But in due time the staff came up with their lists and this is the result.

This isn’t an “Editor’s Choice” or formal endorsement, just a list of gear we like.
